In 2017 the release of a series named Damnation hit the small screen. One thing is for sure it deserves a watch!
Official Damnation Summary
Damnation in exchange of depression is something to think about. But first, let’s look at the official summary of this mini-series.
Seth Davenport is a man masquerading as a small-town Iowa preacher in hopes of starting a full-blown insurrection against the status quo. Focused on his mission, he is unaware that an industrialist tycoon has hired a professional strikebreaker named Creeley Turner to stop the uprising by any means necessary.
But unbeknownst to those around them, these two men already share a secret, bloody past. This epic saga about the secret history of the 1930s American heartland centers on the mythic conflict and bloody struggle between big money and the downtrodden, God and greed, charlatans, and prophets. — Google
I am a history enthusiast. I love to learn about other countries and nations. Especially in periods where we either don’t know much or are often overlooked. The Great Depression is one of those periods.
Because I live in Canada, the history of the United States is quite different despite being our neighbor. Damnation showed me parts of history that I had no idea happened. The story might be fictional, but the historical environment itself is accurate to the time.
Overall, this series is one that shows a period where people needed help. Damnation is what someone would think when watching what people went through. It was a time where everything was scarce, and medicine was stagnant.
The Series’ Story
The series takes place at the beginning of the 30s. This was when the American labor wars took place in the Great Depression. The Iowa storyline is about a man with a brutal past named Seth Davenport.
To hide his identity, he presents himself as a preacher. Davenport uses his charisma to bring one community together in the sole hope of standing against the rich and greedy.
Davenport wants to do well and change his life around by helping people. His assassin skills have people talk. After all, he did present himself as a preacher. But all Davenport wishes to bring down the industrial people and their greed down to their knees.
This preacher imposter is an antihero fighting corruption in the government’s system. He wants to bring down the local bank that plays a crucial part in exploiting the townsfolk. He didn’t account for the sheriff’s department part in it and the newspaper.
An Unexpected Turnaround
Davenport remains unaware of who hired an assassin to take him down, Creeley Turner. The assassin was a convict once and found by Pinkerton National Detective Agency. A wealthy industrialist hired him to take down the town’s preacher. But, the two are not strangers to one another.
The overall feel of the series is like a dramatic and drastic western. Each character has depth and a story that comes with them. You cannot help but want to know more as the story moves forward.
It’s like each main character has a central place and twist you do not expect. Damnation in exchange of depression and many paranoid secrets all over the place.
Creeley Turner was my favorite character in the series. From the second he appeared on the screen I wanted to know more about him. Turner goes through many obstacles to get to his target but keeps falling to his knees. His smarts, despite his lack of education, is remarkable.
It shows you how someone without literacy had to function back then. There were limitations for people like Turner, but he didn’t let it stop him. I admired that from the character.
A Damn Good Watch
The series only has ten episodes, but the story’s delivery is impeccable. If you are a fan of Godless or Hell on Wheels, for sure, this series is going to knock your socks off. If you find yourself missing HOW’s “Swede,” don’t worry, he is in it!
The characters are easily relatable and the story down to Earth. It is the rich against the farmers that eats the best they have to offer while the farmers struggle to survive. As a marksman, Turner’s place has nothing to do with the town because it is personal to him. So, the overall position of that character alone is impressive.
The series goes as far as showing hobbies people had back then that you’d never thought was real. What you think was a myth, or urban legends throw it out the window. Damnation is there to prove you wrong.
Did people trick others into killing one another for sport? That’s right, wait to see the character of Tennyson Duvall! There are behind the scenes in history we know nothing about.
Worth A Binge Watch
Damnation in exchange of depression is what await you in this mini-series. After watching the fantastic series, Damnation was a good suggestion by Netflix. I loved every minute of it and recommend it. It is a time in history that we do not explore and therefore doesn’t know much about. It was a tragic time for many.
This mini-series focuses on the American struggle between the mythical battle among the wealthy, the greedy, and the farmlands, i.e., the Farmers’ Holiday Association. It is one epic story filmed in the picturesque province of Alberta in Canada. The scenery is beautiful, and the acting is outstanding.
My rating is a solid 8.1 out of 10.
